BBC Radio 6 Music has a treat for fans of Marvin Gaye
The American singer and songwriter will be celebrated in 6 Music’s Artist Collection.
In the early hours of Tuesday 22 November, the station gives another chance to hear five one-hour programmes about the late artist, aired back-to-back.
Starting at midnight with In Their Own Words: Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On, the classic album is explored though two interviews he gave the BBC in 1976 – one to Paul Gambaccini for Radio 1 and another to Hilton Fyle for BBC World Service.
This is followed at 1am by Trouble Man, which was first broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in 2014.
Gaye’s second wife Janis, and mother to his children Nona and Frankie, embarks on a very personal journey to reveal the real Marvin. She talks about his troubled life, possibly from clinically depression, with feelings of inadequacy and self-hatred, as well as loving himself above all else.
The programme also has contributions from Marvin’s youngest sister Zeola, music writers David Nathan and Adam White, Motown singer Smokey Robinson, former Motown press officer in the UK Bob Fisher and ex-promotions man Roger St Pierre.
At 2am, it’s episode one of Insight – Marvin Gaye, followed by the second episode at 3am.
First broadcast in 1976, both episodes hear Paul Gambaccini in a frank and insightful interview with the soul legend. He talks about his early years, duetting partnerships and writers and the producers who he worked with.
Finally, at 4am The Marvin Gaye Playlist will celebrate his music, its roots and branches – including those they’ve been influenced by and those they’ve inspired. Songs played include Marvin by himself, with Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston. There’s also The Drifters, Ray Charles, Commodores, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves and more.
You can hear the 6 Music Artist Collection on Tuesday 22 November from midnight until 5am and it will be available on BBC Sounds afterwards.
