Kate Garraway and Jenni Falconer go head-to-head in fun challenge

When the sun comes out it can make us do some weird things and that’s what happened today with Smooth Radio’s Kate Garraway and Jenni Falconer.
Inspired by the Wimbledon championships, Kate and Jenni have gone head-to-head in a fun tennis challenge, on the roof of the Smooth studios in London’s Leicester Square.
Smooth Breakfast’s Jenni and mid-mornings host Kate took on the tennis tournament, which also featured a musical twist… every time the girls hit the ball, they had to name a song from a particular Smooth music artist.
In round one, Kate and Jenni had to name George Michael songs. Initially, Kate struggled to even hit the ball, later revealing, “the thing about me and competition is I make peace with failure!”.
She took the lead in round two, where the pair had to name Sir Elton John songs. Jenni then missed a shot, jokingly going “a bit McEnroe” and throwing down her racket.
In the third and final round, they had to name Movie Musicals, which featured an exciting rally from both girls, before ending in deuce for the close friends, with Jenni revealing it had been “a lot of fun, but we need to keep an eye on Kate – she’s a lot more competitive than we realised!”.
Jenni said she was excited to take part in the tennis challenge, explaining: “Well I love a sporting challenge, and we are in peak Wimbledon season, so a game of tennis was a very exciting prospect for me, however, who knew you needed so much skill for swing ball!”
Kate shared that her pre-match ritual involved some beauty preparation. She said: “My pre-match ritual was a blow dry and the application of fake tan, particularly on the leg area, and just really getting in the zone.
“I’ve been watching a lot of Wimbledon. I feel that if you watch something while sitting on a sofa with a cup of tea, then it automatically goes into your muscles, doesn’t it?!”
Despite their close friendship, there was a playful competitive edge between them. Kate said: “Jenni is one of my longest serving friends. I’ve known her since 2000 when we both started on GMTV.
“For our challenge, Jenni had her own full tennis whites in her wardrobe. It won’t surprise anyone to know I didn’t! So I went a slightly – how can I put it – different route!”
Jenni added: “There was no rivalry. We had a lot of fun! I’ve known Kate for 25 years and we love having a laugh. There are many outtakes from the challenge that you have not seen!”
When asked who was more competitive, Kate admitted: “The thing about me and competition is I make peace with failure. I was just really trying hard to come second!”
Jenni concluded: “I would have said I’m the most competitive but actually now that we’ve done this, I think Kate has a sneaky competitive streak that she keeps at bay – but not on this occasion. It was out in full force! Do not mess with Kate!”
