Republica star Saffron recalls Roger Daltrey video mishap
Saffron has revealed she once had to throw cardboard boxes over Roger Daltrey while filming the iconic video for The One and Only.
The 1990s Britpop favourite joined The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X this morning, where she shared the unlikely story behind her appearance in the much-loved music video.
Saffron, who fronted Republica, played Chesney Hawkes’s love interest in the video alongside future Homes Under the Hammer presenter Lucy Alexander.
She said the two were young actresses at the time when they were invited to audition for what would become one of the decade’s best-known pop videos.
Saffron told Chris Moyles: “Me and Lucy got in, we met Chesney, and I had to throw cardboard boxes over Roger Daltrey’s head.”
She added that even then she was worried about the consequences if anything went wrong.
“I remember thinking, ‘I hope someone’s insured me,’” she joked.
The singer also revealed one of her long-standing pre-show rituals, saying she still plays Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind & Fire before taking to the stage.
Saffron said she continues to do vocal warm-ups before performances, a habit she has kept throughout her career.
Tune into The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X weekdays from 6.30am – 10am and on Global Player.
