Michael Douglas has revealed that wife Catherine Zeta-Jones regularly tap dances for him in their bathroom.
The Hollywood star joined Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston on Heart Breakfast to discuss his autobiography, One Helluva Ride, sharing stories about his famous family, previous relationships and life with the Welsh actress.
During the conversation, Michael also opened up about his Hollywood romances, including his on-screen relationship with Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, and how Catherine feels about the stories included in his book.
Asked how Catherine might write a book about him differently, Michael joked that it would probably cover “50 years difference”, explaining that he had enjoyed a long career and relationships before meeting his wife.
He admitted that he initially planned to focus the autobiography on his experiences as a film producer, but eventually decided readers would want something more personal.
Michael explained: “People want to hear a little of the dish!”
He also revealed that he contacted Kathleen Turner before including their story in the book, explaining that they had remained friends since working together.
Amanda also asked about his relationship with Glenn Close, prompting Michael to explain the potential complications of actors becoming romantically involved while filming romantic scenes.
He said that while it might initially make on-screen chemistry easier, relationships could break down, leaving former couples having to work together despite no longer getting along.
The conversation then turned to Michael’s childhood growing up in a famous Hollywood family, with his father being legendary actor Kirk Douglas.
Describing himself as a second-generation actor, Michael joked about the phrase “nepo baby”, pointing out that between himself and his father they had appeared in around 130 films across eight decades in the movie business.
He also shared a memorable comment from his father, who once told him: “Michael if I knew how successful you were going to be, I would’ve been nicer!”
Michael recalled how Hollywood stars including Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh were regular visitors to his family home, giving him an unusual insight into their lives away from the cameras.
He explained that seeing these famous figures as ordinary people, with their own insecurities and personal challenges, helped him understand the realities of the entertainment industry.
However, it was his revelation about Catherine that provided one of the interview’s sweetest moments.
Michael told Amanda and Jamie that Catherine was the British tap-dancing champion when she was seven years old, and he still enjoys asking her to show off her skills at home.
He explained: “Sometimes, I go and say, ‘Let’s go to the bathroom with the marble floor and give me a little bit!'”
When Jamie questioned whether he really got his wife to dance for him in the bathroom, Michael happily confirmed that was exactly what happened.
It seems that even after years in Hollywood, Michael still enjoys having a little private performance from his wife!
