Christian Horner reveals Geri Halliwell helped fund his racing career

Formula One boss Christian Horner has revealed how his wife Geri Halliwell indirectly helped finance his early racing career, long before they met.

Speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X this morning, Christian discussed his autobiography Drive and recalled how a sponsorship deal involving the Spice Girls helped keep his ambitions on track.

The former Red Bull team principal explained how one of his early sponsors sold cream cakes to major UK supermarkets, including Asda and Sainsbury’s, and had agreements involving both Dennis the Menace and the Spice Girls.

Christian said the company initially expected its Dennis the Menace cakes to perform well, agreeing to put the character on his racing car and review sales halfway through the year before paying him.

However, when he returned to find out how the products were selling, the company had a rather different story to tell.

He recalled: “Dennis the Menace is going okay but holy moly the Spice Girls cake has gone ballistic!”

The success of the Spice Girls cakes meant the sponsor was doing particularly well, creating an unexpected connection between the pop group and Horner’s developing racing career.

Christian reflected on the coincidence during his conversation with Chris Moyles, explaining how his future wife had played an indirect role in supporting him before they had even met.

He said: “So indirectly, Geri, my wife, was financing my career at a pretty early age!”
