BBC Radio 2 celebrates Bob Harris with special 80th birthday programme

Bob Harris is being honoured by BBC Radio 2 as he celebrates his 80th birthday this year.

The legendary presenter, known for his influential music broadcasting career, will be the focus of a special programme hosted by Zoe Ball, exploring the key moments that shaped his life and work.

Harris has spent decades championing country, rock and folk music, becoming one of the most respected voices in UK radio with a style that has defined late-night listening for generations.

The programme, Bob Harris At 80: A Life In Music, will revisit major milestones, including launching his first show on BBC Radio 1 in 1970 and presenting The Old Grey Whistle Test from 1972.

Listeners will hear stories from his interviews with global stars such as John Lennon and The Beach Boys, alongside memories from the early days of artists including David Bowie and Elton John.

The show also reflects on his role in co-founding Time Out and his later career highlights, including the launch of his country music programme on Radio 2 in 1999.

Bob discusses personal challenges, including major health issues, and receiving an OBE in 2011, as well as his return to a prominent slot hosting Sounds of the 70s following the death of Johnnie Walker.

Bob Harris At 80: A Life In Music will air on BBC Radio 2 on 12 April, 3pm – 5pm. It will also be available on BBC Sounds from 6am on 9 April.
