Anne-Marie teases West End return and new album inspiration

Anne-Marie has revealed she would love to return to the West End, while discussing her new music and life as a mum.

Speaking to Amanda Holden and JK on Heart Breakfast, Anne-Marie also opened up about finding inspiration for her fourth album and why she has been exploring a different approach to songwriting.

The singer said her latest material feels different because she no longer has the same relationship experiences that previously inspired many of her songs: “I feel like a lot of my career I’ve written about a lot of really annoying ex-boyfriends and I don’t have one at the moment.”

Anne-Marie explained that she has therefore had to look elsewhere for subjects to write about, adding: “I’ve had to branch out and try and find other stuff to sing about and I do have a lot to sing about.”

She also revealed that a visit to a psychic gave her an unexpected piece of advice about her singing, with the experience encouraging her to change her vocal approach on the new album.

Anne-Marie said the psychic told her: “Your nan is here and she’s telling you in your music you need to stop shouting and sing properly.”

The singer told Amanda she would be interested in returning to the West End, with Amanda suggesting she could play Nancy in Oliver!

Anne-Marie responded enthusiastically: “I’d love to! I love that,” before explaining that she has also brought elements of musical theatre into her new music through the use of live instruments and strings.

Away from her career, Anne-Marie spoke about her children and whether either has inherited her musical abilities.

She joked that her two year old daughter may be “a bit tone deaf”, while revealing her son reacts whenever music stops playing: “As soon as the music stops, he goes, ‘uh oh.’ Every time.”

The singer is currently headlining P&O Ferries Mini Cruise Live and admitted that having some time away from her children can be welcome, although she quickly misses them.

Anne-Marie and Amanda also reminisced about sharing their first kiss, with Amanda recalling that Anne-Marie had “soft lips” and remembering the occasion despite Anne-Marie initially being less certain about when it happened!
