Paul Gambaccini to step down from America’s Greatest Hits show
Paul Gambaccini is stepping down from presenting America’s Greatest Hits on Greatest Hits Radio.
The programme has been part of the station’s schedule since February 2020, bringing Gambaccini’s distinctive knowledge of American chart music to weekend listeners and helping shape the network’s early identity.
Gambaccini originally launched America’s Greatest Hits in 1975, with the show becoming closely associated with his authoritative storytelling and deep understanding of music history.
Throughout its run on Greatest Hits Radio, the programme has attracted a loyal audience, drawn to Gambaccini’s detailed insight and instantly recognisable presenting style.
Reflecting on his departure, Gambaccini said: “It’s been a great pleasure hosting America’s Greatest Hits for so long. I now look forward to a new challenge.”
Station Content Director Andy Ashton praised Gambaccini’s influence on the network, describing his role as crucial during the early development of the brand.
“We want to thank Paul for everything he has done for Greatest Hits Radio,” he said. “Paul was one of the first to spot the potential of this station, adding his weight of quality and credibility to our earliest days. His contribution has been huge, and we’ve loved every minute of getting together every Saturday at five.”
Although he is stepping away from the weekly programme, Gambaccini will remain with the station through its documentary strand, Greatest Hits Radio Superstars.
The series explores the stories behind artists and recordings that have shaped popular culture, with upcoming episodes focusing on George Martin, Prince, ABBA and The Beach Boys among other influential figures.
Gambaccini will also expand his presence on Greatest Hits Radio 60s, where listeners will soon hear a daily one-hour programme featuring his personal selections from the decade.
The Paul Gambaccini Hour will focus on music from the 1960s, reflecting the period widely recognised for transforming the sound and direction of popular music worldwide.
Andy Ashton welcomed Gambaccini’s continued involvement on the station, saying: “We are thrilled that Paul will continue to call Greatest Hits Radio home as part of Greatest Hits Radio Superstars.
Paul’s final edition of America’s Greatest Hits will air on Saturday 28 February.
