Special documentary on Terry Wogan to air again on BBC Radio 2
Sir Terry Wogan’s voice, humour and self-reflection are brought back to BBC Radio 2 in a special extended programme revisiting one of the most intimate interviews he ever recorded.
To commerate 10 years since Terry’s passing on 31 January 2016, it’s another chance to hear the programme.
The two-hour show, Wogan: In His Own Words, first broadcast in 2022, centres on a rare conversation taped in the 1980s, at the height of Terry’s fame.
He speaks openly about family life, career choices and the discipline he believed was essential to broadcasting success.
Recorded decades after his first Radio 2 breakfast show in April 1972, the interview hears Terry reflect on television triumphs including Come Dancing and Blankety Blank, alongside less comfortable moments such as hosting beauty contests.
He also talks frankly about the fragility of fame and the anxiety that comes with constant scrutiny, themes that resonate strongly when heard again so many years later, following his death ten years ago.
The programme updates Terry’s words through new interviews with colleagues and friends, capturing their reactions as they listen back to the recording and share personal memories of working alongside him during his long broadcasting career.
Many recall the advice Terry gave them, often delivered with warmth and honesty, and reflect on the standards he set for broadcasters who followed in his footsteps at the BBC and beyond.
Hosted by Zoe Ball, the show is described as an intimate portrait of a broadcaster whose intelligence, wit and warmth made him a constant presence for millions of listeners and viewers across radio and television.
Zoe says: “Terry was the greatest of all time. I like everyone else, absolutely adored him. He made every listener feel he was talking just to them. So naturally gifted, hilarious, naughty, inclusive and had such empathy.”
Contributors include Dame Joanna Lumley, Patrick Duffy, Gaby Roslin, Claudia Winkleman, Fearne Cotton, Scott Mills, Dermot O’Leary, Greg James and Michael Ball, each offering their own perspective on Terry’s influence and character.
This extended version features additional material from Terry’s original conversation, longer archive clips from a Brighton outside broadcast, and extra reflections from former BBC Director General Greg Dyke and Blankety Blank guest Lorraine Chase.
The programme also includes excerpts from Chris Evans paying tribute to Terry at the Westminster Abbey Service of Thanksgiving in September 2016, marking the life and work of one of Britain’s most recognisable broadcasters.
Wogan: In His Own Words offers listeners another opportunity to hear Terry’s story told as only he could, in his own voice, with clarity, humour and unmistakable humanity. It will air on BBC Radio 2 in the early hours of Saturday 31 January, 2am – 4am.
