Tom Hanks helped launch Sara Cox’s first Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds today.
He joined Sara for a wide ranging interview filled with humour, career reflections and an emotional Toy Story surprise.
Making her first major guest appearance on the new weekday programme, Sara welcomed the two time Oscar winner before admitting she was feeling nervous about taking over Europe’s biggest breakfast radio show.
Tom quickly put her at ease, even delivering a grand introduction for her new role before offering advice from his own experience.
He said: “I’m going to tell you right now, no one knows what they are doing on a motion picture until the third day of shooting.”
Explaining why, he added: “By the third day, you know everybody’s name and you realise we’re all in this together.”
The conversation centred on Toy Story 5, with Tom revealing that the latest film explores children’s growing reliance on technology while celebrating imagination and traditional play.
He described the story as “an authentic struggle” that reflects modern family life, saying the characters continue to explore real world issues through the eyes of much loved toys.
Sara praised the film’s gentle approach to screen time, suggesting it could inspire children to rediscover the joy of playing with toys instead of spending all their time on devices.
Tom also revealed he has almost completely avoided phone addiction by removing the web browser from his mobile, explaining it saves him from disappearing down online rabbit holes.
Away from acting, the Hollywood star spoke about his love of radio and his own monthly music programme, where he enjoys introducing listeners to overlooked classics and new discoveries.
One of the most touching moments came when Sara shared a message from a listener whose two non verbal sons developed their communication skills through repeated viewings of the Toy Story films.
Moved by the story, Tom reflected on the lasting emotional impact of cinema before slipping effortlessly back into the voice of Woody to record a special personal greeting for brothers Logan and Liam.
Addressing them as the famous cowboy, he invited them into Andy’s room to play alongside Woody, Buzz and Jessie, creating a memorable moment that left Sara visibly touched.
As the interview ended, Sara recommended Toy Story 5 to listeners before Tom signed off with Woody’s famous sentiment, telling her: “You’ve got a friend in me.”
