Sekou tells Capital XTRA living with Justin Bieber made them ‘besties’

Rising star Sekou has revealed that three weeks spent living with Justin Bieber helped him rediscover himself and inspired his music after a difficult period.

The singer joined Kamilla Rose on Capital XTRA yesterday to discuss his latest single Catching Bodies and opened up about his friendship with Bieber.

Sekou explained that their connection began on Instagram, with the two artists replying to each other’s stories before meeting in Los Angeles.

“I was in LA doing some writing, and he saw that I was in LA, and reached out and said, ‘come over,’” Sekou told Rose. “I was like, are you mad? That morning I couldn’t breathe, and then we met, and I stayed at his house for three weeks and we made loads of music.”

The experience, he said, not only led to their collaboration on Bieber’s album SWAG but also gave him the personal lift he needed after stepping back from releasing music.

“Not releasing for the last two years, I think I really lost myself mentally. And I think that moment really picked me up,” Sekou explained. “I was really inspired from him, and his surroundings and just how nice he is as a person. I left that trip and just felt so fresh. I felt like I knew who I was.”

Reflecting on their time together, Sekou said the friendship felt natural rather than forced. He added that Bieber’s feedback on his songs gave him new confidence in his work.

“Artists to artists, and musician to musicians, they get so inspired by each other. That’s what I needed,” he said.
