Now that’s how to launch a new show – Scott Mills day one
Scott Mills launched his new BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this morning saying: “Here we go then!”
He was also joined by newsreader Tina Daheley and the show’s traffic & travel presenter Ellie Brennan.
Sounding just like he belongs in the slot, he added: “As a radio presenter and a radio fan all my life, I’m still finding it quite hard to process that this is happening, if I’m honest.
“If I think too much about the previous occupiers of this show it becomes mind-blowing to me for a kid who wanted to be on the radio, but wasn’t sure he had the self-confidence to be able to actually do it.”
Scott, who has worked in radio since he was 16 years old, has been with the BBC for 25 years, first at Radio 1 before joining Radio2 in 2022 to host the afternoon show.
Now on the flagship Breakfast Show, he asked listeners: “If you could make me part of your morning routine, it would honestly mean so much because, believe me, I’m gonna give it absolutely everything I’ve got. I really hope you enjoy it. Let’s go!”
He then played the all-important first song – Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ (Better Man version) and followed it with Kylie’s Spinning Around.
Robbie came on the phone and said to Scott: “I’m just ringing you because I know today’s your first Breakfast show on Radio 2, and I’ve just woken up to loads of messages from people going, ‘Scott’s playing the new version of Rock DJ, it’s his first song’, so thank you!”
He also asked Scott if he’d like to play some tunes for him when he’s on his tour – Scott said he would love to!
THere was a message from Davina McCall, who said: “Scott, it’s Davina. Oh my goodness, you are amazing. I mean, love it. How long have I been a fan, Scott? Like, forever! I know how much this means to you.
“I know how hard you have worked throughout your entire career and I also know what an amazing broadcaster you are. I am so happy for you Scott Mills. And brace yourself, I’m coming to get you!”
There was even a message from the show’s former host, Zoe Ball, who said: “Hello you, it’s me Zoe. I think I’m more excited about your first show than you will be right now.
“I keep getting really tearful. I’m so proud of you, I just need you to know that. You are so born to do this, and I’ve just swallowed an egg custard so I can’t breathe.”
To celebrate the launch of the show, Stockport railway station has been renamed for the day to Scottport!
So Stockport is now “Scottport” for today, to celebrate @scott_mills first @BBCRadio2 Breakfast Show #ScottMills https://t.co/jiOeDvz3SY
