DJ Spoony talks about his brain surgery and new Radio 2 show

DJ Spoony spoke to Mark Goodier on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this morning, ahead of launching his new late-night show on the station next week.

Spoony talked about his love of radio, listening to Steve Wright, Kenny Everett and Chris Tarrant growing up, and making a speedy recover from brain surgery in December, following a small bleed on the brain.

Mark asked him how he was feeling and was he 100% better now?

“Yeah thank you. I’m back to… You know my fitness isn’t where it was, but my health is fine, the scars are healing amazingly,” he told Mark. “I can’t believe how well the scars are healing.  I’m sure I’ve had paper cuts that have taken longer to heal than the operation scars.

“I’m really good. Thank you for asking.  Thank you to everybody that’s messaged, it’s been a bit overwhelming if I’m honest.”

Mark acknowledged that the human body has an amazing way of repairing itself especially after serious things, and said he’s glad Spoony is nearly back to full strength.

He then asked about the new Monday to Thursday late show on Radio 2 and how it will be different to the old Friday night show.

Spoony explained he is going to bring the vibe and energy of Fridays to four nights a week.

“We’re going to get more of the audience involved more of the time because I just want that to be a nice little club for us all, something to set your clock by,” he said.

“We have a couple of new features which we’ve tried and tested which I’m really excited to get going, and we’ll bring the old favourites with us. ‘New To Spoon’ which is my tune of the week, ‘Rewind Selector’ which is an opportunity for members of the public and the great and the good in entertainment to give us 3 or 4 songs that take them back to when they started going clubbing.  That’s been really popular on a Friday night..  Needless to say, loads of great music, that’s what I’m really excited by.”

As Spoony has spent three decades in radio so far, Mark asked if he remembered his first ever show because he may get a similar feeling when he starts the new show on Monday?

“My first ever show on pirate radio, that was a real moment,” Spoony replied to Mark.  “I grew up at a time listening to, when I say the greats, the real greats, someone like Steve Wright who became my colleague, people like Kenny Everett and Chris Tarrant.”

He explained how he would sit looking at the radio feeling he was watching TV and when the time came for him to start broadcasting, he felt like he’d been doing it a long time, even though it was his first ever link.

Continuing, he added: “But moving on from that, we joined Radio 1 as the Dream Team, shouts to Timmy and Mikey, in the year 2000, then it’s been a series of in and outs, but absolutely loving it.  But I can’t believe I’m getting into my third decade – that’s crazy!”

Spoony’s new Monday – Thursday show, 10pm – midnight starts next Monday, 27 January, the same day as the new Scott Mills Breakfast Show, 6.30am – 9.30am and Trevor Nelson’s show, 2pm – 4pm also begin.
