Peter Kay turns down Netflix for Phoenix Nights but teases new film

Speaking on this morning’s Capital Breakfast, Peter Kay revealed he declined Netflix’s offer to licence Phoenix Nights even after the streaming giant tried to tempt him with an air fryer.

Kay explained to Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby that the sitcom, made in a different era, “isn’t very politically correct now,” and he wasn’t keen on issuing warnings before streaming it.

“They rang me up and asked if they could put Phoenix Nights on Netflix,” Kay said. “Anyway, they sent me a load of paperwork… I just said, ‘no, I’ll leave it.’”

The comedian added with a laugh that Netflix later sent him a Phillips air fryer, clearly an attempt to sweeten the deal.

Kay also offered a major update for fans: he has written a Phoenix Nights film. “It’s written and it’s done,” he said, but revealed he’s waiting for de-aging technology to improve.

The storyline includes flashbacks to the past, and Kay doesn’t want to rely on “really bad makeup” to make characters look younger. He added that once his tour is finished, he’ll begin exploring the possibilities for the film.
