Olivia Rodrigo reveals hilarious lyric misunderstanding

Olivia Rodrigo has revealed her favourite tracks from her new album, shared a story about British slang and an unexpected sleepless night caused by celebrating Arsenal fans.

The singer joined Capital Breakfast for A Very British Day Out at the pub with Jordan North to discuss her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

During the interview, Olivia looked back at one of her earliest songwriting experiences and explained how a British phrase left American listeners completely confused.

She said she had written a song about someone she disliked and deliberately tried to use British language in the lyrics.

“I wrote this song about someone that I didn’t like, and I was actually trying to be British. And I wrote ‘he’s a bloody asshole’,” she said.

The reaction from listeners was not what she expected.

Continuing, she added: “Everyone listened to it and they aren’t British, so they literally thought ‘bloody asshole?’ Like something surgically or medically was going on.”

Jordan pointed out that the phrase would be interpreted very differently in the United States, prompting Olivia to joke that it sounded more like a medical condition than an insult.

The conversation turned to Olivia’s recent stay in London, where she found herself caught up in celebrations following Arsenal’s Premier League title victory.

The singer said she was staying in North London and struggled to sleep because of the huge crowds and constant chanting outside.

“I didn’t sleep a wink. I couldn’t get out of my house. I was stuck. Literally the parade group encircled my house I was staying at,” she explained.

She described hearing chants of “Arsenal” throughout the day and night, with the celebrations continuing even when she travelled on the Tube.

Olivia joked that if she appeared tired during the interview, Arsenal supporters were to blame.

Despite the lack of sleep, the singer was happy to discuss her new album and revealed several tracks that hold a special place in her heart.

Asked to choose a favourite, Olivia highlighted The Cure before naming several other songs she loves from the record.

“I think The Cure is my favourite song. I love the last song Cigarette Smoke a lot. I really love Purple. Oh, and I love Honeybee,” she told Jordan.

She explained that each song represents a different stage of growing up and carries its own personal meaning, making it difficult to pick just one standout track.
