Foo Fighters chat with Huw Stephens reveals fast recorded new album
Foo Fighters have revealed their upcoming twelfth studio album was recorded in just a matter of weeks during a new interview on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Frontman Dave Grohl joined bandmates including Nate Mendel and Ilan Rubin for an in-depth conversation with presenter Huw Stephens during his evening programme.
Discussing new single Your Favorite Toy, Grohl agreed with Stephens’ description of the track as one of the band’s “brattiest” songs, explaining it helped define the direction of the new record.
He said the creative breakthrough came after months of experimenting in a home studio before the band reunited, adding that once recording began, momentum quickly took over.
Grohl explained: “When this was completed, it was like, okay, this is the type of album we should be making. The world doesn’t need another Stairway to Heaven. We can just blast these really fast, fun songs.”
The singer revealed the album was completed at remarkable speed, saying the recording process felt like it lasted only three or four weeks as the band followed the energy of the new material.
Despite the intense studio schedule, Grohl balanced recording with family life, joking that he would move between tracking vocals and cooking dinner or helping get children ready for school.
The interview also explored the band’s return to live performance, including smaller warm up shows designed to rebuild chemistry following lineup changes, with Rubin describing the experience as both intense and exciting.
Grohl praised Rubin’s debut performances with the band, recalling how the drummer felt ready to continue playing even after lengthy two and a half hour shows.
Listeners also learned that backing vocals on the new album include contributions from Grohl’s daughter Harper, highlighting the family atmosphere surrounding the project.
The conversation touched on album naming debates, touring preparations and the band’s long-standing mindset toward recording, with Grohl admitting each release often feels like it could be their last.
The new Foo Fighters album is set for release on 24 April, following what Grohl described as a deliberate push to shorten the gap between finishing the record and sharing it with fans.
