Gerard Butler says new dragon film is for his late mum

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has revealed that the latest How to Train Your Dragon movie is dedicated to his late mum, who died before the film was completed.

Speaking to Sonali Shah on Magic Radio, Gerard shared how important the role of family is in the story, and in his own life.

“I was so excited for her to see it,” he said, “but I had a feeling she wasn’t going to make it. So, Dean very kindly dedicated the movie to her.”

Gerard, who returns as Stoick the Vast in the animated adventure, described his mum with heartfelt warmth, saying, “If Stoick had a mum, that would have been my mum. She was an amazing woman. She was strong, she was fiery, and she was graceful, and she was beautiful.”

He added: “I wish the whole world could have met my mum because she was a really special woman.”

The new film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, reunites Gerard with co-stars Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera and is expected to be one of the biggest animated releases of the year.

The emotional connection to the film gives added meaning to Gerard’s performance, especially for fans who have followed the franchise from the beginning.
