Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell discuss Tom Cruise on Absolute Radio!

Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell joined Dave Berry on his Absolute Radio Breakfast Show this morning and discussed which Tom Cruise performance should have won an Oscar.

They also talked about why Tom is still old school when it comes to texting and, of course, making Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning!

Host Dave Berry was keen to see if Simon and Hayley could help persuade Tom to come on the Absolute Radio Breakfast Show. He asked them to put in a good word on the Mission Impossible WhatsApp group!

Hayley Atwell offered to text him but revealed: “He [Tom] still texts the semi colon and bracket for a smiley face, he’s old school, but we can put in a good word, we can definitely smooth the way.”

Simon Pegg said: “Tom could absolutely go on til he’s 100 he shows no sign of slowing down and he won’t, I’m sure.”

He told Dave that they started making this film when everything was shut down in 2020 and were all bubbled together in Norway and Italy.

“We just spent all our time with each other, and we had no choice but to bond quickly and profoundly which meant making these films was a family affair,” he recalled.

Going back to Tom, Simon said: “Jerry Maguire is a film that Tom should have won an Oscar for, Tom’s really good at playing flawed, vulnerable people… It’s such a beautiful performance for me.”

Hayley explained what she had learned from making the film: “The training involved for me and the maintenance of that training changed my understanding of what the body can do and how to make the body dynamic and mobile and have endurance and stamina and strength these are all the things that I get to take with me and that’s invaluable.

“I tried skydiving – which my character doesn’t need and use! – I got my PADI diving certificate during training five years ago and it wasn’t until about three weeks ago I was brought back for an added bit, and it became a useful thing to have gotten five years ago!”
