Dr Amir Khan joins Scala Radio to explore benefits of classical music
Dr Amir Khan will explore the links between music and mental health in a new three-part series for Scala Radio.
In the first episode, the NHS doctor, bestselling author and GP on Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, will investigate the correlations between classical music and mental wellbeing. The programme begins on Sunday 9 October, the day before World Mental Health Day.
He’ll be looking at how classical music can reduce people’s anxieties by lowering cortisol levels, blood pressure, heart rate and even breathing rate. Dr Khan will also review findings that show it can improve sleep quality after surgery and explain how listening to classical music can also help relieve pain.
Other episodes will focus on what we can do to improve mental health with music, such as active listening, dancing, and joining choirs.
Speaking ahead of the series, Dr Amir Khan said: “It is fantastic that initiatives such as World Mental Health Day bring conversation on the subject to the forefront, and even better that Scala Radio is using its platform to amplify it. Bringing my own medical knowledge and personal experiences to the show, I’m honoured to have this opportunity to explore exactly how classical music can be beneficial to us.”
Scala Radio’s Programme Manager, Jenny Nelson added: “It’s brilliant that classical music has become increasingly popular over recent years as people turn to it for comfort and solace, and this series will celebrate the power of peaceful music whilst examining why it’s so beneficial for us. I can’t wait for Dr Amir to provide a soothing soundtrack to our Sunday evenings.”
Mindset on Scala Radio with Dr Amir Khan can be heard 6-8pm from Sunday 9th October.
