GK Barry and Charley Marlowe join Radio 1 in big schedule changes

BBC Radio 1 has unveiled a major schedule shake-up from September, with GK Barry and Charley Marlowe among a host of new presenters joining the station.

Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah will host the Live Lounge from Monday to Thursday between 10.30am and 1pm, bringing live performances, artist interviews and new music to listeners.

Charlie said she was “so excited” to present the show with Jeremiah, while he described landing the role as a “real full circle moment” after listening to the programme as a college student.

Podcast star GK Barry will also return to Radio 1 with her own series of shows, beginning on 10 September for an initial six week run.

Best known as the host of the chart-topping Saving Grace podcast, she promised listeners “a lot of humour, chaos and embarrassing stories” alongside music and celebrity guests.

Charley Marlowe joins Vicky Hawkesworth to host the Friday to Sunday 10.30am to 1pm show, having previously come through Radio 1’s presenter talent initiative. She said she was “thrilled” to be joining the station.

The changes also see Mylo and Rosie become the new hosts of Early Breakfast on weekdays after previously presenting on Hits Radio, while Emil Franchi takes over Weekend Breakfast.

Elsewhere, Lauren Layfield will front a new Sunday programme, The Official Chart: First Look, broadcasting live from Birmingham, while Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga become the new presenters of Life Hacks.

Sian Eleri’s Chillest Show moves to 9pm on Sundays, and Alyx Holcombe’s Indie Show moves to Tuesday nights.

Announcing the changes, Radio 1 Head Aled Haydn Jones said the refreshed schedule brings together “the world’s best DJs with the very best new music from the UK and beyond.”

The overhaul also marks the departure of several familiar voices. Rickie Haywood Williams and Melvin Odoom will leave after seven years on the station, alongside Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy.

Rickie and Melvin thanked listeners for making their time at Radio 1 unforgettable, while Dean McCullough said leaving after six years had been “such a hard decision” but added he was “very excited for the future.”
