DJ Spoony thanks NHS after spending Christmas Day in hospital
BBC Radio 2’s DJ Spoony has thanked the NHS and his family after undergoing surgery for a small brain bleed.
He said that he’d been having headaches for a while and had put off going to the doctor.
On 21 December he went to A&E where he had a brain scan and was subsequently sent to see a specialist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge who said he needed an operation as soon as possible.
Posting on Instagram, he explained that it was a routine operation to sort out his subdural hematoma but had spent four nights in hospital.
“Within 10 minutes of the operation I was on my way back to the ward,” he said. “Fully alert. Chatting. Not groggy after the general. Couldn’t wait to have that banana by my bed as I’d been nil by mouth since 1pm the previous day. That was the best banana I’ve ever had….as for the ginger shot. Perfect.
“What was crazy was the headache had instantly gone. 4 weeks of this throb and finally peace up top.
“I woke up on Christmas morning in hospital. I was so grateful. Had something special to look forward to. Going home to my family and friends. All who had been incredible for the last few days. The visits, support, calls, messages. Very humbling.”
He also acknowledged some sadness waking up near to some people who didn’t know where they were and that they might have to spent the day alone without their loved ones.
“I think about them all every day and hope they are making progress in their recovery,” he said.
Ending his message with thanks to Bedford Hospital for the scan and Addenbrookes for completing the task, he said: “You really are the best in the business. All the nurses, doctors, health assistants that looked after me. Thank you to the NHS. Thank you Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot and Mo Salah.
“That was one of the best Christmases I’ve ever had. I’m very grateful for all it showed me. For all I have. For all the love, hugs and…love.”
