Foo Fighters reveal album secrets in Radio X studio special

Foo Fighters have given fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at their new album during a special appearance on Radio X, with Dave Grohl sharing candid insights into the band’s creative process.

The group joined John Kennedy for X-Posure at Metropolis Studios, where Dave, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear talked through their latest release Your Favourite Toy track by track ahead of tonight’s broadcast.

During the interview, Dave revealed the album was originally set to have a very different name, before a last-minute change linked to a film release.

He said: “I wanted to call the record For Good. It had a few meanings, and I thought it worked really well, but then that Wicked movie came out called Wicked: For Good, and I was so annoyed. So we changed it and it became Your Favourite Toy.”

The frontman also spoke openly about his distinctive vocal style, admitting he has no clear explanation for how he maintains his voice despite years of high-energy performances.

He said: “I honestly don’t know how I don’t lose my voice. Sometimes I feel like I’m screaming so hard my throat could pop like a balloon. That kind of freaks me out.”

Despite their global success, Dave insisted the band’s approach remains unchanged, describing Foo Fighters as still operating with the same mindset as their early days.

He said: “We still function like a band that plays in a garage. People might think we’re more professional than we are, but the way we work together hasn’t really changed.”

The creative process behind the album was also explored, with Dave comparing it to building something piece by piece without knowing the final outcome.

He said: “It’s like a stew where you’re adding ingredients and hoping it’s edible. Nobody really knows what it’s going to sound like until it comes together, and when it works, it really works.”

The session offers listeners an in-depth look at the band’s latest project, combining new music with reflections on their long-standing approach to songwriting and performance.

The full interview is part of tonight’s X-Posure on Radio X, with the band’s appearance also available to watch ahead of broadcast on YouTube.

Listen to X-Posure with John Kennedy on Radio X, Fridays and Saturdays from 11pm – 2am, across the UK and on Global Player.
