Bob Harris shares health update and plans return to radio shows

Veteran broadcaster Bob Harris has shared an update on his cancer treatment, revealing he is recovering at home after a recent spell in hospital.

In a post on Instagram, the presenter explained that he had been experiencing severe back pain, which led to further tests.

“Several scans later, we discovered that my prostate cancer has got into my upper spine… really frightening news,” he said.

Bob began a course of radiotherapy shortly afterwards, spending two weeks in hospital. He has now returned home and says he is “on the pathway to recovery” and feeling stronger each day, as he starts a programme of rehabilitation.

He also spoke about the support he has received during what he described as one of the most difficult periods of his life.

“My family has been here for me in a massive way, helping me through one of the most difficult times of my life,” he said, adding that he “can’t even begin to think of a way to say thank you.”

Bob praised the support of the BBC Radio 2 team, including Head of Station Helen Thomas, and said he is aiming to return to his shows soon. He has set a personal target of mid-May for Country and the end of May for Sounds of the 70s.

He also thanked stand-in presenters Darius Rucker and Shaun Keaveny, while making clear he is keen to return. “I absolutely cannot wait to be back,” he said.

The broadcaster reflected on messages of support from listeners following his recent 80th birthday programme with Zoe Ball, adding that the experience had taken on new meaning given his current health situation.

Bob ended his message by thanking fans and colleagues for their continued support, saying he hopes to be back on air soon.
