Capital Breakfast surprise proposal leaves listener stunned
A woman from Poulton-le-Fylde was left stunned this morning when her boyfriend revealed himself as Capital Breakfast’s Secret Fiancé and proposed live on air.
Sophie Black, who works in administration, had been told she was in London for a competition-won overnight stay at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower.
Unaware that her partner Darren Spencer had been secretly working with Capital Breakfast producers, Sophie had been listening each morning on her commute as the show teased listeners with cryptic clues about the identity of the Secret Fiancé.
The big moment unfolded at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel during breakfast when other diners suddenly stood and began singing as part of a surprise choir.
Sophie’s favourite artist, Tom Grennan, then entered and performed Little Bit of Love before Darren got down on one knee and proposed.
Darren said Sophie had “brightened up my world in every single way” and asked her to marry him. Sophie, crying with emotion, responded “yes, yes, yes” to cheers from the Capital team, Grennan and listeners across the UK.
Back at Capital studio, Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby spoke with Sophie about her shock and delight, with Sophie admitting she “never in a million years” expected such a surprise. She had listened without any idea that her own engagement was the subject of the campaign.
Darren described the experience as difficult from start to finish but said seeing Sophie’s reaction “makes everything worth it”.
The Capital Breakfast team said they were grateful to be part of a moment that mattered so deeply to the couple and intended the reveal to be exactly what both wanted.
