John Bishop criticises World Cup during Absolute Radio interview
John Bishop has delivered a blunt verdict on the World Cup during an appearance on Absolute Radio.
The comedian and actor was speaking to Andy Bush and Richie Firth on their Hometime show while promoting Is This Thing On?, the Hollywood film inspired by his journey into stand-up comedy.
Bishop is well known as a passionate football fan, yet he made it clear his enthusiasm for the sport does not extend to the upcoming tournament, which he believes has lost credibility and meaning.
During the studio conversation, he criticised FIFA’s leadership and decision making, arguing that the organisation has undermined the values many supporters associate with the global game.
He also questioned the choice of host nation and the wider political environment surrounding the event, suggesting it risks overshadowing the football itself and alienating players and supporters alike.
Bishop told the Absolute Radio presenters: “My feeling is boycott it, honestly I think the World Cup is a joke. I think FIFA giving Donald Trump a big rosette and a peace prize has undermined everything that football is about.
“I think the fact it’s being played in a country that’s threatening not to give visas to the players, to the staff, to the fans, I think it’s ridiculous. I think it’s a complete embarrassment. I think the World Cup is now a joke, I don’t think I’ll be giving it any time.”
Bishop’s stance also contrasts with his long-standing love of football, something he has often discussed in stand-up routines and interviews across radio, television, and podcasts.
His appearance on Absolute Radio focused largely on Is This Thing On?, which charts his move from working class life in Liverpool to finding success on comedy stages, before later branching into acting.
The film has been positioned as a personal project for Bishop, offering audiences an insight into the determination and self-doubt that shaped his early career.
