Pulp take top spot in new Absolute Radio Britpop Anthem Chart

Absolute Radio has wrapped up its Britpop summer revealing the Ultimate Britpop Anthem, as voted for by listeners, with Pulp’s Common People taking the crown.

Despite Oasis dominating much of the Britpop spotlight this year, the Gallagher brothers were pushed down the list as Jarvis Cocker’s band claimed the number one position. Pulp also secured a second place in the top five with Disco 2000, which landed at number five.

Oasis had to settle for fourth with Live Forever, while Blur’s Parklife took third place. The Verve reached second with Bittersweet Symphony, leaving the final chart to represent all the major players of the era.

The countdown began at 9am this morning with Ben Burrell and concluded just before 6pm when Richie Firth revealed the number one track.

Speaking after the result, Richie said: “This result shows the enduring quality of a song which was released 30 years ago but which still sounds as fresh today.

“Seeing crowds of all ages sing it live on Pulp’s recent tour demonstrates why it is now officially the greatest Britpop anthem of all-time.”

The rest of the listener-voted top ten featured Oasis tracks Don’t Look Back in Anger and Wonderwall, Ocean Colour Scene’s The Day We Caught the Train, Manic Street Preachers’ A Design for Life and Suede’s Animal Nitrate.
