Maya Jama says goodbye to Radio 1 after two years
Maya Jama has decided not to continue her Radio 1 contract at the end of June because other commitments mean she doesn’t have the time to dedicate to her weekend shows.
She says that it was a difficult decision to make and has loved every moment of her time at BBC Radio 1. Maya sent thanks to her team for their hard work and friendship during the last two years.
Maya joined the station in 2018 and most recently has been hosting 10am – 1pm on Friday and Saturday.
Although nothing has been confirmed, it’s recently been reported she’s been offered the chance to appear on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.
Posting on Twitter earlier, Maya said: “My loveess I’ve made the very difficult decision not to continue my Radio 1 contract from June.
“As you know I have been juggling and there are a lot of exciting commitments happening that would mean I’m not able to dedicate the time needed to my weekly radio show.
“I’ve loved every moment of my time at Radio 1 and I would like to thank the team for their hard work and friendship during the last two years.
“It’s been a JOURNEY, thanks to all you cuties that tuned into the show every weekend, it was so great to hear that we have been getting the largest proportion of under 35s tuning in for our on-demand show on BBC Sounds. So we are going out with a bang! Love youuuuu listeners”
Schedules on the station have been changed due to the coronavirus pandemic with the weekend mornings slot on a 3-week rotation between Maya, Jordan North and Dev & Alice. Radio 1 says Jordan, Dev and Alice will continue to do the show in rotation, which means Maya’s final show on the station was Sunday 3rd May.
