Jamie Miller was fixing iPads for Tesco when an unexpected social media moment changed the course of his music career.
The singer joined Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman on Heart Breakfast this morning to discuss his hit single Babydoll and reveal how Khloe Kardashian helped him land a record deal after discovering his singing online.
Jamie explained that his music ambitions once felt like a distant dream, despite taking his first steps towards a career in the industry.
Speaking about his early working life, he told the presenters: “I was working in a call centre, for Tesco.”
When Theakston asked what his job involved, Jamie added: “Yeah, fixing iPads!”
The singer had already tried to make his mark on television, finishing third on The Voice, but success did not immediately follow his appearance on the show.
He explained that things only began to change when Kim Kardashian shared a video of him singing with her followers, describing him as her new favourite singer.
Miller told Heart Breakfast: “She posted a video of me singing and said I was her new favourite singer.”
The unexpected endorsement quickly attracted attention from the music industry, with record labels contacting him and an opportunity arriving almost overnight.
He recalled: “Back then, every single label was in my emails and then the next day I was on a flight to New York City and then I ended up signing a record deal.”
Although the deal initially felt like a life changing moment, Miller admitted that his career did not follow the straightforward path he had hoped for.
He explained that he experienced periods of success followed by quieter spells, leaving him uncertain about what might happen next.
Now, however, Babydoll is helping the singer reach a wider audience, with him describing the song’s growing popularity as a significant moment in his career.
He said: “Babydoll is like the reason why I feel like it’s finally hitting mainstream and seeing that happen is the most mind-boggling thing in the world.”
For Jamie Miller, the journey from fixing iPads at Tesco to attracting attention from one of the world’s most recognisable celebrities has included setbacks as well as opportunities, with Babydoll now bringing fresh momentum to his music career.
