Razorlight have recalled some of their wildest rock and roll moments as they prepare to celebrate 20 years of their debut album.
Johnny Borrell, Andy Burrows and Dominic Byrne joined The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Breakfast this morning to discuss the band’s upcoming 20th anniversary tour and look back at their career.
Among the stories shared was Borrell’s attempt to flood a hotel room in Seattle after discovering he could not get a drink late at night.
Borrell explained that it was the end of a long tour and, despite not being a drinker, he wanted a beer but was frustrated by the situation at the hotel.
He said: “I just wanted a beer, you know, and that wasn’t happening. And then the guys in the lobby were annoying me. So it was a kind of silent protest.”
Borrell said that when he eventually left the room, there was “an inch of water everywhere”.
Burrows also revealed his own recent rock and roll moment, after arranging a photo shoot at his local pub involving a television being thrown from a window.
He told Moyles: “Last year I did a photo shoot where I got a television, and the local pub let me throw the television out the window.”
The conversation also revisited a memorable occasion when Borrell missed a flight before Razorlight were due to perform live on Moyles’ breakfast show in Germany.
Moyles recalled how the band were prepared to continue without him, with the presenter suggesting they could perform with an instrumental track if Borrell failed to arrive.
However, Borrell eventually appeared the following morning, with Moyles remembering him arriving “looking like a million dollars” and acting as though nothing had happened.
Borrell also explained the unusual story behind Razorlight’s name, revealing that it came from him trying to say “yeah, it’s alright” while he was “a little bit messed up”.
After hearing a recording of the performance, his friend and manager Roger told him: “Sounds like you’re saying Razorlight.”
Borrell said he immediately recognised it as a good band name, after the group had spent weeks trying to come up with one.
