Blur bassist Alex James has suggested the band will not be rushing into another reunion, saying they need to let Oasis finish their comeback before even thinking about returning.
Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Alex reflected on Blur’s recent activity and joked that now is not the right time for another comeback while Oasis is firmly back in the spotlight.
Alex joined Chris Moyles and Dominic Byrne for a wide-ranging chat, which also included memories of watching bandmate Damon Albarn perform with Gorillaz at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
When Chris pointed out that Blur was still “ticking along quite nicely”, Alex acknowledged the band’s 2023 reunion, but suggested fans should not expect another return anytime soon.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s a long time ago now. 2023,” Alex said. “I think we need to let Oasis get their stuff out of the way before we even sort of countenance…”
Chris then joked that Blur may have missed an opportunity to play Knebworth again on a significant anniversary year.
Alex quickly dismissed the idea, laughing: “No, no. Honestly, honestly, I don’t want to poke that hornet’s nest again, trust me!”
The conversation later turned to Damon Albarn and Gorillaz, following a major performance at Spurs’ Stadium which Alex attended with one of his twin sons, Galileo.
“Everybody’s tearing it up,” Alex said. “I came in with one of the twins, Galileo, on Saturday to see Albarn at Spurs.”
He praised the show, joking that some Arsenal supporters in attendance had suggested it was the first time the stadium had ever been full.
Alex then compared watching Damon perform with Gorillaz to the emotional ending of the hit musical film La La Land.
“Have you seen La La Land?” he asked. “You know the bit at the end where Emma Stone goes to see Ryan Gosling, and they’re both kind of living their dream, but they’re not together anymore.”
Chris responded with a sympathetic “Aww!” before Alex continued the comparison.
“But I guess Blur’s got a happy ending, usually,” he said. “Because we do, you know, occasionally…”
The comments offer a glimpse into the relationship between the Blur members, who have pursued successful projects outside the band while still reuniting from time to time.
While Alex’s remarks suggest another Blur reunion is not currently on the cards, he appeared relaxed about the band’s future and left the door open for more performances down the line.
For now, however, it seems Blur are happy to let Oasis enjoy the reunion spotlight before considering their next move.
