The Maccabees have revealed they are working on new music with hopes of releasing a full album.
The band shared the update during an interview with Radio X’s Dan O’Connell at On the Beach Brighton, following their return to performing together after an eight-year break.
Asked whether fans were any closer to getting a new album after hearing new songs on tour, Orlando Weeks said the band had already made significant progress since reforming.
He explained that last summer they were not ready to introduce new material because they had not written any songs after reuniting.
Orlando said: “Well, in that we’re playing new stuff, it’s a big jump for us. We hadn’t played together for eight years and then last summer we weren’t ready to do any of that and we didn’t have any songs.”
He added that the band now has new material, including one song they are particularly enjoying performing live, while continuing to develop others between tour dates.
Speaking about the band’s plans, Orlando said: “And now we have some songs, and we have one that we’re really confident and we’re enjoying playing. And others that we’ve been working on whilst we’ve been away and we’ll keep working on.”
He also confirmed that releasing a full record is the goal, although the band wants to make sure the music reaches the standard they are aiming for before taking the next step.
“That’s the aim is to try and do it, make it good enough, and then it’ll happen,” he said.
The comments will give fans fresh hope that The Maccabees’ reunion could lead to their first new album since the band returned to performing together, with new music now firmly part of their plans.
