Dave Grohl surprised by daughter’s record deal news he tells Radio X

Dave Grohl says he only discovered his daughter had signed a record deal when she told him over dinner.

The Foo Fighters frontman was speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X as the band marked the announcement of their forthcoming album, Your Favourite Toy.

Chris referenced Violet Grohl’s music being selected as Record of the Week on Radio X, prompting Dave to reveal how little involvement he had in her debut project.

“She made this album with a producer named Justin Raisen, and she did it on her own,” Dave said. “I had absolutely nothing to do with this record at all. And I had no idea.”

He explained that Violet, who is about to turn 20, asked to come over for dinner before sharing the news. “She came over and told me, like, ‘I signed my record deal today.’ I’m just like, ‘Oh my God!’”

Dave added that watching his daughter work quickly and independently on her debut inspired him during the making of the new Foo Fighters album.

The interview also covered the absence of guitarist Pat Smear, who is currently recovering from injury.

Nate Mendel said Pat was “getting restless” and sending messages about plans for summer shows, while Dave joked: “Dude, fix your leg and get back out on the road!”

New drummer Ilan Rubin told Chris he “didn’t expect to be recording with the band and certainly not as quickly as everything unfolded”. He said the album “came kind of out of nowhere” and was completed at pace, describing the experience as “a great ride so far”.

Chris Shiflett also recalled his own audition for the band, while Dave revealed that some hopefuls had been so nervous they accidentally locked their guitars in their cases before playing!
