Baz Luhrmann hints Elvis stage musical during Magic Radio appeara
Baz Luhrmann has revealed plans for an Elvis stage production during a radio appearance this week.
The acclaimed filmmaker shared the unexpected update while joining Dan Morrissey on Magic Radio’s Perfect Playlist, where he reflected on his creative career and future projects.
During the interview, conversation turned to whether his hit film Elvis could eventually be adapted for theatre audiences, prompting Luhrmann to confirm development is already underway.
Speaking during the evening show, Luhrmann surprised listeners by sharing details fans have been hoping to hear since the film’s global success and awards recognition.
He told Morrissey: “It’s being worked on, it’s happening yeah. I don’t know if I was supposed to announce it but hey I just did.
“I’m not doing it because I have this thing I’ve learnt – it’s like I got Alex Timbers to do the Moulin Rouge! musical – I can never go backwards. I can’t be me when I was 28 doing Romeo + Juliet but I love handing it on, I’m not precious. I’m like take my baby!”
Luhrmann explained his preference for collaborating with new creative voices rather than personally revisiting earlier work, highlighting his belief in allowing stories to evolve beyond their original format.
The revelation adds further excitement for fans of Elvis Presley and musical theatre audiences, following the film’s strong cultural impact and renewed global interest in Presley’s legacy.
Luhrmann’s Perfect Playlist appearance also explored the music and moments that shaped his creative identity, offering listeners insight into how soundtracks have influenced his distinctive visual storytelling style.
While no casting, production timeline, or creative team details have yet been confirmed, the confirmation alone signals a major potential crossover between cinema and stage entertainment.
The Elvis film’s vibrant musical sequences and stylised storytelling have already drawn comparisons to theatrical productions, making the transition to live performance a natural next step for many observers.
Luhrmann’s comments suggest he will continue shaping the project creatively, while entrusting theatrical specialists to reinterpret the story for live audiences.
