Brand new Stranger Things radio station launches across the UK today
Fans of Stranger Things can now listen to a new radio station inspired by the TV show which has launched today across the UK.
Global has partnered with Netflix to bring you WSQK ‘The Squawk’, a fully immersive pop-up station built straight from the world of Stranger Things five.
You’ll hear non-stop 1980s hits, fictional Hawkins-style features, and a line-up of American DJs who sound as if they have stepped directly out of the series.
The station arrives with presenters Vance Goodman and Mindy Flare, alongside a full suite of retro commercials designed to mirror the small-town atmosphere that fans know from the show.
Daily programming includes Rewind at nine: Turning Hawkins Upside Down, which challenges fans to recognise classic tracks played backwards, plus Talk to Tammy, an outspoken agony aunt whose advice is as blunt as it is entertaining, and Dial-A-Dedication, where you can request shout outs by registering messages online through Global Player if you don’t have access to a landline.
James Rea, Chief Broadcasting and Content Officer at Global, said: “In Stranger Things, Netflix has created one of the most iconic worlds on television, so bringing WSQK ‘The Squawk’ to life has been a joy. Fans love the show’s nostalgia and energy, and this station bottles that completely.”
If you’re a techie or an ‘anorak’ you might be pleased to hear that to recreate an authentic mid-80s sound, WSQK is being processed through a vintage Inovonics FM250 audio processor first released in 1983. It’s a model widely used by thousands of stations during the latter part of the decade, giving the pop-up service a true period feel that matches its in-world storytelling.
WSQK ‘The Squawk’ is available on Global Player, via smart speakers using the commands “Alexa, play The Squawk” or “Hey Google, play The Squawk”, and on DAB across London, with the station broadcasting from today until 1 January.
