Toyah Willcox joins Greatest Hits Radio as Martin Kemp heads to jungle
Toyah Willcox is joining Greatest Hits Radio to cover for Martin Kemp while he travels to Australia to take part in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.
The news comes after Toyah’s successful run on sister station Greatest Hits Radio 80s, and she will now take over Martin’s Mix Tape across Friday and Saturday nights from 21 November.
Toyah says she cannot wait to get started, adding that she is thrilled to cover the show while Martin “is eating bugs in the jungle”.
She promises that the Mix Tape will be “party central” throughout her residency and says she is looking forward to spending the next few weeks with Greatest Hits Radio’s audience.
Before flying out to Australia, Martin sat down with presenter Kate Thornton for a full interview, which will air this afternoon between 1pm and 4pm on Greatest Hits Radio.
In the chat, Martin says he is “absolutely looking forward” to taking part in I’m A Celebrity, explaining that the appeal lies in doing something completely different for a month and stepping away from the real world.
He describes the show as “iconic television” that he has always wanted to experience, saying the moment felt right this year because he was finally able to make the timing work. He confirms that he has been approached before, but this was the first time he could say yes.
Martin also says he is not worried about taking on the eating challenges, insisting that he wants to “experience the whole thing” and have fun with whatever comes his way.
He admits that the Cyclone trial is the one every contestant hopes to do, and says reaching that point would feel like celebrating the final stretch.
Reflecting on his family’s long-standing love of the show, Martin says that watching his son Roman take part remains one of the most exciting periods of their lives, describing how they gathered around the television every evening to keep up with him.
He reveals that Roman was the first person he called when deciding whether to accept this year’s offer, and that his son urged him to go for it, even admitting he was jealous of the adventure ahead.
Martin says his wife Shirlie was equally supportive, joking that she encouraged him to sign up so she could enjoy the luxury hotel she sees every year on television.
As he prepares to enter the jungle, Martin has one request for Greatest Hits Radio listeners: vote for him to take on as many trials as possible because he wants to “experience everything”.
