Olivia Colman recalls first meeting Benedict Cumberbatch 30 years ago

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch joined Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman this morning to talk about their new film The Roses.

During the conversation, they shared the story of their very first meeting over three decades ago.

Colman revealed that their paths first crossed in a recording studio, long before either of them became household names.

“It was either a radio advert or a radio play,” she recalled. “Ben had scruff long hair, was a bit unshaven, and wore this long jumper with big holes in it. His thumbs went through the sleeves, and he was bouncy and Tiggery and went ‘Hello! I’m Ben!’”

Cumberbatch laughed at the memory, joking: “Olivia said 30 years ago, which is shocking how old I must be.” When Zoe Hardman teased him for saying “I” and not “we,” Colman quickly replied that his eyesight was probably just getting worse.

The pair’s natural chemistry delighted Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman, who is sitting in for Amanda Holden.

The actors are now starring together in The Roses, their latest big-screen collaboration. While the film was the main reason for their visit to Heart Breakfast, some of the conversation focused on their personal history!
