Johnny Marr named as latest 6 Music Artist in Residence
Legendary guitarist and songwriter Johnny Marr is joining BBC Radio 6 Music as Artist in Residence.
The British musician will present eight new shows, which will be broadcast Monday 18 – Thursday 21 September and Monday 25 – Thursday 28 September, 9pm-10pm.
Johnny Marr says: “It’s been fun doing the 6 Music Artist in Residence. I get to share my inspirations, collaborations, and recommendations. I hope people enjoy it. Good times.”
A founding member of Manchester band, The Smiths, Marr is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of his generation, with a unique style that has shaped modern music.
He is also known for his widely acclaimed solo albums over the last decade including The Messenger, Playland, Call The Comet and Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. His instantly recognisable playing can also be heard on records by Electronic, Talking Heads, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, The Pretenders, Pet Shop Boys, Blondie and many more.
6 Music’s Artist in Residence is a journey into the musical soul of an artist, based around a theme or mood.
Each episode of Marr’s series sees him explore songs that have shaped specific periods of his life. He explores the artists who influenced his own playing and North x North West, in which he recalls his time living in Portland, Oregon.
Throughout the series, he’ll also take a deep dive into the inspiration behind various The Smiths riffs, demonstrate his deep love of Chic and share advice for anyone about how to play the guitar.
