Becky Hill says The Voice never called her back after she challenged bosses over the way contestants were treated after appearing on the show.
The singer made the comments while speaking to Jimmy Hill on The Capital Evening Show, where they discussed her upcoming new album and her experience on the first season of The Voice in 2012.
Jimmy asked Becky whether she would consider returning to the programme as a coach, particularly after the show refreshed its coaching line-up with Cheryl and Aitch joining Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
Becky said she did not think the programme would have her, revealing that she had previously interviewed for a potential fifth coaching chair.
She explained that during the interview she told The Voice: “I’m the only success story from The Voice. And there is a reason for that because you have talented people on your show.”
Becky then criticised what she saw as a lack of support for contestants after their television appearances, saying: “You make a TV show out of them and then you don’t help them out afterwards.”
The singer recalled being 18 when she had to make her own connections and approach people in the music industry, saying she kept the contacts she had made through the show and contacted them herself.
She also said she believed some contestants were placed in a difficult position after being exposed to a huge television audience without necessarily having the experience to continue their careers afterwards.
Becky told Jimmy: “There were so many people on that show that were contestants that didn’t have that experience and kind of came off the show feeling like they had a normal job.”
She continued by describing how they were “shoved on TV in front of 12 million people and then they were just spat back out.”
Becky said she would have wanted to use a coaching role to help artists by introducing them to people in the industry, rather than simply appearing on the programme to discuss her own experience.
However, she revealed that she never heard back after the interview.
“I would love to help people out and introduce them to people and blah, blah, blah. I never got a call back,” she said.
Jimmy reacted with “Wow!” before Becky summed up her thoughts on a possible return to the programme with a joke.
She said: “I don’t think it is a case of would you do The Voice, I think it is a question of would The Voice do me?”
Listen to The Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill on Monday to Thursday from 7pm – 10pm across the UK and on YouTube.
