Richard E Grant handed Andy from Essex a record £1.25 million radio prize during a surprise Cash Call on Friday afternoon.
The actor made the winning phone call at 5pm, telling ceramic tiler Andy almost immediately that his life had changed forever with the biggest prize in UK radio history.
Richard joked about his approach to the call, admitting: “I have a tendency to get to the punchline too quickly sometimes!” before congratulating Andy on his life-changing win.
Andy was initially stunned by the unexpected news and asked: “I can’t believe this, is this really genuine?” before revealing plans for a special family holiday.
Andy’s wife is originally from Mauritius and the couple had been hoping to visit family there next year, although the cost had previously meant the trip was only a dream.
Andy said: “We’re going to have a big holiday! A family holiday. My wife is originally from Maiturius, we’re thinking about going next year and visit some family, we couldn’t afford that so it was just a dream really.”
He added: “We were trying to go there one day, but hopefully that day has arrived!”
Cash Call, which runs across Global radio stations, gives listeners the chance to win life-changing prizes, with a celebrity making the surprise call to one lucky person every Friday at 5pm.
For Andy, the call from Richard turned a regular Friday afternoon into a moment worth £1.25 million, with the unexpected news delivered almost before he had time to process it.
The next Cash Call will offer an even bigger prize, with one listener set to receive £1.5 million next Friday.
That means the record-breaking £1.25 million win has already been followed by news of another major prize, giving listeners another chance to receive a life-changing call.
