Andrew Garfield has admitted he would love to appear on The Traitors but is not sure he could handle the pressure.
Speaking to Sara Cox on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the actor discussed the opening episode of Celebrity Traitors and revealed he was already feeling stressed about some of the contestants.
Garfield said he was particularly concerned for James Acaster and Amol Rajan, while praising Acaster’s attempts to spot clues around the castle and work out who could be a Traitor.
He said: “I absolutely love that show. But I’m stressed. I’m really stressed for James because I love James Acaster and I’m a bit stressed watching him.”
Sara Cox agreed, saying it was a case of “him or Amol Rajan”, before Garfield praised both contestants and highlighted Acaster’s detective work.
Garfield said: “James, I love that James is immediately trying to find the patterns and say, ‘Well, there’s a perfume bottle there, and there’s pictures of it.’ Well… this is proper, like Miss Marple. It’s great.”
The actor was also surprised by Richard E Grant, particularly after the actor’s memorable confession in the first episode.
Describing Grant’s behaviour, Garfield said: “He was just like a seven-year-old! It’s just like the most frustrating person to play the game with because it’s like… it’s brilliant. I mean, legendary immediately, as Claudia said.”
Garfield was then asked whether he would consider entering the castle himself for a future series of The Traitors.
He admitted he would be tempted, although the pressure of being watched throughout the experience could prove difficult.
Garfield said: “I would love to do it. I don’t know if I can handle the pressure to be honest. I could be a faithful. I don’t think I could be a traitor for a month or however many weeks.”
He also suggested the constant filming would make the experience particularly intense, comparing it to doing press for several weeks.
When Cox asked whether his acting experience would help him hide his emotions if he became a Traitor, Garfield had a surprising answer.
He said: “For me, it’s actually I think actors find it hard to lie in a weird way. I find it much harder to lie. I think I’m too expressive and I’m too readable.”
Garfield therefore appears more comfortable with the idea of being a Faithful, although his comments suggest the reality of life inside the castle could still be difficult.
