Emotional Toby Tarrant completes epic 56-mile pedalo challenge

This morning, Radio X’s Toby Tarrant finished his epic and fraught 56-mile unicorn pedalo charity challenge – Tarrant vs the Thames: One Wey or Another.

Disembarking the pedalo in Putney, west London, Toby hugged his wife Pippa and sipped on a well-deserved pint of Guinness to celebrate!

Toby did the charity challenge to raise money for Global’s Make Some Noise and initially said he wanted to get to £35,000. He was amazed when he found out it was at £70,000 a couple of days ago.

Chris Moyles, who was on air at the finishing line, said: “We asked Toby in a week, ‘How much you like to raise?’ And said, ‘I did £35,000 when I did the London Marathon a few years ago for Make Some Noise, he goes, if I get hit around that mark, I’ll be really happy.’ Well, you doubled that as well. You know that went to £70,000, and then it went to £100,000, didn’t it?”

Toby responded: “This morning it was £150,000,” and Chris asked what would make him say that it had been worth doing?

“If I say the number and we don’t hit it, it’ll be such a sad ending, but I think we all know the number I’m talking about. If this number begins with a two, I don’t know what I’ll do with myself,” Toby replied.

Chris continued: “Okay, well here’s the news. The number begins with a two. The number begins with a two!

“It’s been quite remarkable, and I swear on my life, I think a lot of it is because people really like you, and they’ve felt your pain, and they’ve wanted to support, which is why you can be delighted that you pedalling on a pedalo on the Thames since Monday has raised £255,294!

“It’s over a quarter of a million pounds raise by Toby for Make Some Noise!”

Almost lost for words, Toby said: “Oh man, how? I actually think less of everyone who donated now! What were you thinking? I’m not exaggerating, that is just insane. It’s so stupid, I can’t even get my head around it.

“Thank you so much to everyone who donated! The charities that we met along the way, like, they run on a shoestring budget. We’ve just given them a quarter of a million pounds. It’s mean that they can exist; some of those will exist for a decade off that money.

“Oh man, thank you so much. Oh Chris, thank you. You’ve been unbelievable. Thank you so much!”
