“Dreams really do come true,” says Ken Bruce broadcasting from pub
Ken Bruce was made up this morning when he celebrated one year with Greatest Hits Radio broadcasting live from a pub in central London.
The legendary broadcaster was surprised when a series of musical guests and old friends turned up for the broadcast and a pint!
First to arrive, was friend Lynn Bowles, who joined Ken for a chat at the beginning of the show. As always, everything stopped at 10.30am for PopMaster which saw Chasers Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan and Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace go head-to-head with Jenny emerging triumphant with 15 points to 12.
Fairground Attraction performed their hit ‘Perfect’, tweaking the lyric from ‘It’s Got to Be’ to ‘Ken’s first anniversary’, before Basil Brush took a break from serving behind the bar to wish Ken well.
Vanessa Feltz was another well-wisher joining Ken for a celebratory drink as Texas frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri arrived to turn the table on Ken and ask him about his Golden Year. He chose 1969 and songs from Thunderclap Newman, Amen Corner and Diana Ross & The Supremes.
Greatest Hits Radio colleagues including Simon Mayo, Mark Goodier, Richard Allinson, Jenny Powell, Andy Crane, Des Paul, Lynn Parsons and Alex Lester joined Ken to present him with the obligatory cake.
The show was brought to a close by Mike and Suggs from Madness and an original rendition of ‘It Must Be Love’ or as Suggs put it ‘It Must Be Ken – Nothing More, Nothing Less – Ken is the best!’
Ken said: “Well it turns out dreams really do come true – what a morning it’s been. I’ve loved seeing old friends and hanging out with all of my new ones from Greatest Hits Radio.
“It’s been a brilliant first year and now, with the show finished, I’m going to enjoy raising a glass to many more.”
Andy Ashton, Greatest Hits Radio Content Director added: “We knew we had to do something very special to mark Ken’s first year with Greatest Hits Radio and what could be more special than letting him do his show from his favourite place – the pub!
“It’s been an incredible twelve months following Ken’s arrival at the station and we’re looking forward to all the exciting plans we have for the next twelve.
“Ken and all of us at Greatest Hits Radio are so grateful to everyone who’s joined us and continued to join us on this incredible journey.”
