Will Mellor tells Greatest Hits Radio of love for music over acting
Actor Will Mellor spoke with Jackie Brambles on her Greatest Hits Radio show.
Both he and his professional Strictly partner Nancy Xu popped in for a chat before heading off on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing tour.
The Hollyoaks and Two Pints… star discussed Strictly, how music, rather than acting was his first love, and what it’s like being a neighbour to Liam Gallagher.
Will told Jackie that when he was working in London, he lived in a flat that backed on to Liam Gallagher’s garden.
“When I first moved in, he came round on a BMX and went ‘Alright? Welcome to the area’ – the only northerners around,” Will revealed.
He told the story of when he was watching his team Manchester United on TV and at half time they were winning.
“I came out and stood on my back porch as Liam was in his garden, and shouted ‘We’re doing alright, aren’t we?’ He went ‘What?! Are you a Red?’, I said yes, and he just gave me the two-finger wave, walked back into his house and never spoke to me again. Not quite as neighbourly once he realised I was a United fan,” Will recalled.
Music has always been Will’s first love and he wanted to be in it as well as acting. When he was 12 or 13 years old, he taught himself to play piano.
“My Dad got a piano from a pub that was being knocked down, brought it home, put it in the kitchen and I just started playing,” he said.
When he left Hollyoaks in the 90s Pete Waterman offered him a song to release and he went for it.
“I thought this was my chance, but I got swallowed up by it all, it was a bit manufactured, but I loved it when I was doing it,” Will admitted. “I was on Top of the Pops and I got to number 5 in the charts.
“It was a moment of ‘Wow!’ I thought it was proper and I’m going to get album deals, but it was over as quick as it started. It was just one of them things and it was a bit of a shame as I always wanted to do music.
“I will revisit it at some point because life’s about fulfilling everything you want to do and I would love to do more,” he revealed.
