Tom Grennan reveals he fell out of love with music before new album

Tom Grennan has revealed he fell out of love with music before rediscovering his passion while making his new album.

The singer joined Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby this morning to discuss his new music, share the story behind his creative comeback and reveal his unusual fear of elbows.

Tom explained that he needed to take a step back and reconsider his approach to making music, admitting that he had been working on it rather than enjoying the process.

He told the presenters: “I kind of fell out of love with music a little bit. And I think that is because I was working it and I wasn’t playing it.”

The singer decided to return to his roots by picking up a guitar again, having not played one for around three years, and contacted friends he had worked with on his first album.

They rented a cottage in Hastings to write together, creating an environment that helped him reconnect with the music he loved making.

Describing the experience, he said: “It was such a euphoric, cathartic and almost a spiritual experience. It was mad!”

Tom added that returning to the basics of writing songs on a guitar reminded him why he had fallen in love with music in the first place.

The conversation also took a more unusual turn when Chris Stark brought up the singer’s fear of elbows, prompting Tom to explain what makes the body part so uncomfortable for him.

When Chris asked what was behind the phobia, Tom admitted: “They are too nobly for me.”

He went on to clarify that it was not simply the word itself that bothered him, explaining: “It’s the thought of them and the inside of it. Even talking about it makes me feel sick.”

The admission sparked laughter in the studio as the presenters discussed a phobia that Tom has apparently mentioned on the show before.

There was also a hint of exciting news for fans hoping to see the singer perform live again, after Sian Welby read out a listener’s message asking him to tour.

When Sian passed on the request, Tom offered a brief response: “Maybe.”

His answer prompted a reaction from the presenters, with Sian suggesting that fans could have something to look forward to.

The appearance also saw Capital Breakfast continue its Feel Yourself Friday campaign, supporting breast cancer awareness in partnership with charity CoppaFeel!.

The campaign encourages people to get to know their bodies and check themselves regularly, helping to remind listeners of the importance of breast cancer awareness.
