Sting has opened up about his close friendship with Shaggy, joking that their wives are “beginning to suspect something”.
The music stars have worked together on several projects, and Shaggy is also appearing in Sting’s musical The Last Ship for two nights, although he has touring dates to honour afterwards.
Speaking to Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Heart Breakfast, Sting was asked about Shaggy after the reggae star recently appeared on the programme and spoke warmly about his friend.
Jamie reminded Sting that Shaggy was involved in The Last Ship, prompting Sting to explain that his friend would only be part of the show for two nights because of his existing touring commitments.
Sting also recalled Shaggy’s appearance with the production at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, where he said the singer had been “fantastic”.
He described Shaggy as “a wonderful mischievous character” before Jamie pointed out that Shaggy had spoken very fondly about him during his recent Heart Breakfast appearance.
Sting responded: “Well, we adore each other.”
Jamie then asked how their friendship had developed into what he described as a bromance, with Sting explaining that sometimes people simply meet and immediately feel a strong connection.
He said: “In life you just meet people and you feel like you’ve known them your entire life or a lifetime before.”
Sting added that despite being “completely different”, the pair get along extremely well and enjoy spending time together.
He joked: “We just get on like a house on fire, but we are completely different and yet we get on.”
The comment prompted laughter in the studio before Sting delivered the line that caught the attention of the conversation, saying their wives were “beginning to suspect something”.
Sting and Shaggy have previously worked together musically, with their friendship continuing through their shared involvement in The Last Ship.
The Last Ship is Sting’s musical inspired by his childhood experiences growing up in Wallsend, with the singer continuing to be involved with the production as it reaches audiences in different locations.
During his appearance on Heart Breakfast, Sting also spoke about the musical and his touring plans, while reflecting on his friendship with Shaggy.
For Sting and Shaggy, however, their friendship appears to be just as important as their work together, with Sting making it clear that the pair simply enjoy each other’s company.
