Sara Cox’s first Radio 2 Breakfast Show begins with joyful celebration

Sara Cox officially launched her new Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds this morning.

She opened with Lizzo’s About Damn Time before greeting listeners with her trademark humour and warmth.

Speaking for the first time as the station’s breakfast presenter at 6.31am today, Sara immediately set the tone for the programme with a lively welcome that reflected the style listeners have come to expect.

She said: “It is 6:31am. It’s The Sara Cox Breakfast Show! Monday 6th July 2026. Hello to your howdys, to your dafts of…come on! You know the nonsense I love.”

Sara admitted she was enjoying the moment as she settled into one of UK radio’s biggest programmes.

She told listeners: “I’m actually alright! This is nice isn’t it, it’s nice isn’t it! Sophie and Whitney are already regretting watching the footie. More on that in a bit!”

The first song on the new Breakfast Show was Lizzo’s About Damn Time. Sara then introduced Finally by CeCe Peniston with a playful nod to her new role.

She joked: “Kicked off with ‘About Damn Time’, this is ‘Finally’…CeCe Peniston. No message in the music, don’t be silly! No, come on, that’s too self-indulgent!”

She also played a short section of Etta James’ At Last before following it with Olivia Rodrigo’s Stupid Song, continuing the celebratory feel of the show’s opening minutes.

Later in the programme, Sara shared a story about England’s dramatic 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico and how her husband accidentally had the result spoiled.

She explained: “HusBEN, last night, slept downstairs so I could get a good night’s sleep. And he was like, I am going to wake up in the morning and watch the footy highlights. So don’t tell me who won, don’t tell me the score or anything.”

She continued: “He’s laying in the front room and he just wakes up and hears a football fan coming down the street, ‘where were you when we won 3-2,’ and he’s like nooo!”

Tom Hanks is the first of Sara’s guests on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, which marks a major new chapter for the presenter, waking listeners every weekday morning on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
