Mabel performs three songs from BBC Radio 2’s Piano Room

On Vernon Kay’s BBC Radio 2 show this morning, Mabel performed for final Radio 2 Piano Room of 2024, from BBC Maida Vale and accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

BRIT Award-winning pop sensation, Mabel, performed a previous hit – Don’t Call Me Up, a new song – Vitamins, and a classic cover of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.

Launching on the music scene in 2015, Mabel is the daughter of producer Cameron McVey, best known for his seminal work with Massive Attack, Portishead, Sugababes and All Saints. Her mum is Neneh Cherry, who enjoyed chart success in the late 80s and early 90s.

During this morning’s appearance, Vernon put to Mabel a question from the previous Piano Room performer, Paul Weller, who wanted to ask her: “Hello Mabel, my question to you is what is it like coming from such a musical lineage as your family is? Is it a help or hindrance, I’d be interested to know?”

Mabel responded that she thinks it’s a blessing not a curse because she has people to go to for help.

“I have people I can lean on and that have really good experience in what I do,” she said. “I think when I was younger, maybe, it was like more of a thing. I was worried that people were going to, I was always just going to be Neneh Cherry’s daughter, but now I’m so proud of the things that both my parents have accomplished.

“Like my whole family are in music and I’m proud of the things that they’ve accomplished, and I am because they are.”

Mabel’s Radio 2 Piano Room performance is now available to hear on BBC Sounds and watch on BBC iPlayer.
