Michelle Visage to mark The Bodyguard at 30 on BBC Radio 2
The film was released 30 years ago this November.
It was the biggest film of 1992 and has the biggest-selling soundtrack in history. It marks the pinnacle of the late Whitney Houston’s legacy and is now a successful stage show.
Whitney superfan, Michelle Visage, who also featured on the soundtrack, is to host an hour-long special on BBC Radio 2 recalling the superstar’s journey leading to the release of the film.
She hears from the man who discovered Whitney, Clive Davis, who oversaw her involvement in the movie, despite initial concerns with that decision.
Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp played the role of the manager and remembers being on set with the star. Award-winning film score composer, Alan Silvestri, also looks back at the recording of the soundtrack and tells of his surprise at the global success of the film.
Other’s featuring in the programme include singer Lisa Stansfield, who also featured on the soundtrack and former Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brooks who announced I Will Always Love You as the UK’s official Christmas number one single of 1992.
Radio 2’s soul and R’n’B expert, Trevor Nelson shares his memories of the impact of the film, and British soul star Beverley Knight talks about starring in the West End stage version of the movie and the continuing appeal of the story and music.
