Actor, writer and film maker Theo Johnson joins BBC Radio 1Xtra to host new show

Theo Johnson is joining BBC Radio 1Xtra to host a new BBC Music Introducing show, dedicated to showcasing unsigned and undiscovered artists from across the UK.

Birmingham born Theo, who is a content creator, actor, film maker, musician and now broadcaster, will present his new show from The Mailbox in Birmingham every Sunday 10pm-12am from 11 September.

The show will shine a spotlight on unsigned, undiscovered, and under-the-radar UK musical talent – giving them a platform and the opportunity to reach a national audience. It will be 1Xtra’s first dedicated BBC Introducing show and the first permanent show in its schedule to be broadcast outside of London.

1Xtra recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and has a long-standing commitment to finding and supporting new talent from across the UK.

BBC Music Introducing is BBC Radio’s platform which supports unsigned and undiscovered artists, with over 800,000 tracks uploaded to its and nearly 300,000 artists registered.

Theo Johnson says: “It feels great to be a part of 1Xtra history. I’m grateful to Faron for entrusting me to be the first 1Xtra presenter to have an Introducing show on the network and for it to be based in my hometown of Birmingham makes it extra special!”.

Faron McKenzie, Head of Station, BBC 1Xtra adds: “1Xtra has a rich history of spotting the freshest new talent on the scene and providing a platform for them to be discovered by a national audience, and so I’m really excited to be launching a new show dedicated to that.

“We’re also committed to increasing investment and supporting broadcasting talent across the UK so to have Birmingham’s own Theo presenting this from Brum is fantastic”.

In other schedule changes, 1Xtra’s RnB show with DJ Ace will move to Saturday 11pm-1am.
