BBC Radio 1 is to hold its first Drag Day

Saturday 21 August will be Radio 1’s first-ever Drag Day with Bimini, Tayce, Lawrence Chaney and Jodie Harsh hosting their own shows.

The day will include special mixes and surprise guests, with Radio 1 DJs Arielle Free, Clara Amfo, Dean McCullough and Charlie Hedges on hand to help the Queens as each one takes over the airwaves.

Bimini says: “I used to listen to Radio 1 every day when I was a teenager. I would be listening to Grimmy and Fearne and saying to myself one day I would be hosting a show! Absolute dream come true and I can’t wait to get in that studio and have a laugh with Dean! You’re gonna have to drag me out of there!”

Tayce says: “I am so excited to be getting the nation up and their days started. I can’t wait to work with Clara and bring some Tayce antics to Radio 1.”

Lawrence Chaney says: “I can’t wait to join my fellow Scot Arielle to fulfil a childhood dream of mine as a wee girl from Helensburgh to host a show on national Radio 1.”

Jodie Harsh says: “I am beyond excited to host a major dance party on Radio 1 with Charlie Hedges, rounding up such an incredible day of queens on the king of radio stations. I promise it will be the ultimate drag dance extravaganza. Get your heels and your wigs at the ready!”

Charlie Hedges says: “I am BUZZING to be co-hosting with Jodie Harsh, someone who we absolutely LOVE on Dance Anthems…and to my amazing Dance Anthems family that listen every week and to all the first timers tuning in for the first time for Drag Day…expect energy, big tunes and a day rave EVERYONE is invited to and you won’t forget.”

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: “Our young audience love drag culture so it’s right we celebrate and showcase the very best of UK drag. It will be a day filled with fun and entertainment and also a chance for our listeners to hear a different side to these amazing UK drag queens.”
